U.S. Dept. of Education invites applications for bio grants

The Department of Education invites applications to support fellowships in subject areas of national need - Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Nursing, Physics, and Educational Assessment, Evaluation, and Research - to assist graduate students with excellent academic records who demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in their courses of study at the institution. The department anticipates making 107 36-month awards ranging between $128,628 and $214,380. Eligibility is limited to U.S. institutions of higher education. Proposals are due Mar. 16. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences invites R25 grant proposals for the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development program, which provides institutional grants to establish research training programs at institutions with research intensive environments that will increase the preparation and skills of underrepresented students in the biomedical and behavioral sciences as they academically advance in the pursuit of the Ph.D. degree in these fields. Approximately $5 million will be available for new and renewal grants. Eligibility is limited to U.S. institutions of higher education. Responses are due Jan. 25, 2010.
