Health care of future: Creating customized cures

[Source: Phoenix Business Journal] – Personalized medicine, the science of matching drug treatments based on a patient’s genetic makeup, is here — sort of.

“Personalized medicine almost implies there will be one medicine for each different person,” said Dr. Fernando Martinez, director of Bio5 Institute in Tucson. “It’s really not going to be that way, ever. It’s difficult to do that.”

Instead, scientists are working on tests to determine which existing drugs work best on those with certain genetic makeups. But they aren’t all accurate.
