In other states with strong biosciences sectors - Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina - the philanthropic sector has played a critical support role in convening groups, sponsoring educational seminars, and providing critical core funding. We believe the Foundation's commitment to the biosciences over the next decade is the most effective way to fulfill our mission of improving the quality of life in Arizona. The Battelle recommendations will help to form the basis for future Foundation initiatives in this sector.

Arizona has reached a crossroads. As the state begins to emerge from the current
economic recession, emboldened by victories with TGen and IGC, it can choose
one of two paths: revert to a hands-off policy and lack of strategic investment in
future economic growth, or harness the biosciences economy and, through its
leadership, continue to work together in unprecedented unity. Only by fostering
broad public- and private-sector partnerships that strengthen and support our
universities will it be possible to reverse current trends and introduce the substantive
changes needed to leverage Arizona's unique assets, attract investments, create jobs,
and propel this state into the bioscience economy.
