Chair's Message

Arizona’s continued success in building a thriving bioscience economy is fueled by the efforts of Arizona’s Bioscience Roadmap Steering Committee and related groups that have helped Battelle, with Foundation support, to implement the Roadmap. Only by pooling ideas and resources with others who share this vision could we collectively hope to identify and sustain mutual goals.

Though hundreds of Arizona’s leaders have been involved in this collaborative effort, special recognition and thanks go to Marty Shultz, vice president of government affairs for Pinnacle West Capital Corp. and Arizona Public Service, who has chaired the Steering Committee and campaigned ardently for public support of the new Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz). Thanks, too, to Greater Phoenix Leadership for shaping the SFAz vision and forging a statewide partnership with the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the Flagstaff 40 to support that vision. Much of this work revolved around the efforts of Don Budinger, chairman of the Rodel Foundations, who brought commitment and passion to his leadership role.

Arizona has reason to celebrate a growing list of notable achievements accomplished in a relatively short time period. Bold investments and solid infrastructure building have positioned the state well. Now comes the critical juncture — having the collective fortitude and patience to stay the course and sustain collaborative momentum.

This Foundation and its Board are pleased to serve as a continuing catalyst and convener for the Roadmap. We are indebted to the scores of individuals and organizations whose collective commitment has provided the base for a bright Arizona future.
