Arizona Bioscience Sector Sustains Strong Job Growth

Neither the recession nor the subsequent economic doldrums have impeded growth of Arizona’s bioscience sector, a new report shows. During the post-recessionary period of 2009-10, bioscience jobs increased by 7.4 percent, compared to a 1.8 percent drop for the state’s overall private sector, according to an analysis of Arizona biosciences, commissioned by the Flinn Foundation.

New Phoenix mayor signals emphasis on biosciences

Greg Stanton, the newly elected mayor of Phoenix, began his tenure on January 3 with a strong show of commitment to the bioscience sector, announcing a plan to develop a bioscience cluster around the Mayo Clinic hospital campus in north Phoenix and reaffirming his support for the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix.

Arizona-centric "Dream Team" targets melanoma

A partnership of nearly 50 scientists, led by Jeffrey Trent, president and research director of the Phoenix-based Translational Genomics Research Institute, has won a highly competitive $6 million grant to find new ways to stop melanoma, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. Researchers from Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic Arizona are also playing key roles for the project, which is funded by Stand Up To Cancer and the Melanoma Research Alliance.

Artificial-heart maker SynCardia, IGC chief Penny take top honors at AZBio Awards

Capping an evening celebrating Arizona's bioscience community, SynCardia Systems Inc., the maker of the Total Artificial Heart, was named Arizona Bioscience Company of the Year at the 2011 Arizona BioIndustry Association Awards on October 13. Mayo Clinic, joined by ASU, announces Arizona medical-school campus

Mayo Clinic has announced that its second medical-school campus will be established in Scottsdale and could enroll a class of 48 physicians-in-training as soon as 2014. Mayo will undertake the $266 million project in conjunction with Arizona State University, whose faculty will teach courses in the science of health-care delivery.

Roche hires diagnostics champion to lead Ventana Medical Systems

Longtime UA pharmacy dean appointed to lead health-sciences colleges

J. Lyle Bootman, dean of the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy and a worldwide authority on health outcomes, has been named UA's new senior vice president for health sciences. In his new role, Dr. Bootman will oversee the university's colleges of nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and public health, including operations in both Tucson and on the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

FDA grants approval to scorpion antivenom tested by UA team

After twelve years of investigation, a scorpion antivenom tested under the direction of University of Arizona researchers has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The new drug, which will be sold under the name Anascorp, has proved dramatically effective in reducing the potentially life-threatening symptoms of bark-scorpion stings.

With $100 million for high-speed data network, Phoenix-based Institute for Advanced Health gains prominence

The Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health, which announced in June that it would establish its headquarters in downtown Phoenix, has assumed financial responsibility for National LambdaRail, a 12,000-mile fiber-optic communications network for researchers across the country. Enabled by the CSS Institute's $100 million commitment, the high-speed data link will develop a new emphasis on health information, with the CSS Institute's Arizona-based activities driving that new focus.

In wake of deal between MIHS and UA med school, focus shifts to new hospital
