Scottsdale-based MedApps Inc. has received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for an over-the-counter remote patient monitoring system for diabetes.

The device, called D-PAL, allows people with diabetes to automatically transfer their daily glucose reading from a glucose monitor directly to a central server, where it can be stored and reviewed by healthcare professionals.

According to MedApps, D-PAL is the first of a series of medical devices that will integrate into a central system to allow patients with chronic diseases to lead more active lifestyles.

Additional integrated devices will include scales, blood pressure monitors, spirometers, pulse oximeters, electrocardiogram,, and a variety of implantable devices such as pacemakers.

MedApps was founded in 2006 as a start-up company and is a mentor participant in the Arizona State University Technopolis Mentoring Program.
