Full Story:
Humana, a Kentucky-based medical insurer, will open its first national mail-order drug facility in Phoenix.
The company chose Phoenix over five other cities because it already runs managed-care operations here, and there are established drug wholesalers and two pharmacy schools within the state.
The facility, which will be located in southwest Phoenix at 4302 W. Buckeye Road, could employ as many as 150 people and ship as many as 75,000 prescriptions a day.
While some seniors are currently reluctant to get their drugs through the mail, that could change, William Fleming, vice president of pharmaceutical and clinical integration for Humana told the Arizona Republic. Humana wants to be ready for that change, he said.
The company has already hired about 110 employees for the 117,500 square-foot facility, General Manager Chris Meilinger told the Republic.
According to Battelle, the average annual wage in Arizona for a job in drug and pharmaceuticals is $56,147. The average salary for all industries is $34,043.
Barry Broome, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, told the Republic that Humana, a Fortune 500 company, could expand more of its operations in the Valley.
