Clinical trials are holding promise for a new cancer drug whose roots can be traced to Arizona State University.

According to The Arizona Republic, a compound synthesized from an African willow tree is proving successful in damaging blood vessels that feed solid cancer tumors. Such vascular-targeting agents are being hailed as the next generation of anti-cancer drugs.

Oxigene, a Massachusetts biotech firm, is working to commercialize a drug based on the research of ASU's Cancer Research Institute. Institute director G. Robert Pettit identified and isolated the compound in 1987.
