Full Story:

Earlier this summer, Gov. Janet Napolitano signed a bill creating the Governor's P-20 Council of Arizona (P-20), a committee charged with developing strategies to improve education in Arizona from preschool to graduate education.

The council, comprised of educators and policymakers, met for the first time on Aug. 5, 2005. Napolitano and Rufus Glasper, chancellor of Maricopa Community Colleges, co-chair the committee.

Although the first meeting focused on dropout rates and literacy levels, an important component of the initiatives is the need to improve math and science education.

According to the executive order, the P-20 Council is to consider two strategies as part of its efforts to improve the education pipeline:

  • "giving all students the excellent teachers and leaders that they need, particularly in the areas of math, science, and literacy"
  • "reaching down into middle school and elementary standards to ensure high school preparedness for math and science"

The board hopes to submit its plan to voters in 2008.
