Banner Health introduced its new Alzheimer's Institute facilities with a grand opening celebration that included breakfast, presentations, tours, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The institute, which is the first Center of Excellence at Banner Health, is located in downtown Phoenix at North Willetta Street and East Ninth Street, near Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center.
The mission of Banner Alzheimer's Institute is to identify effective Alzheimer's therapies in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner.
Dr. Eric M. Reiman, a groundbreaking Alzheimer's researcher and brain imaging expert, leads the institute.
The new complex will feature a memory disorders clinic, a family and community support program, a clinical trials program, and a world-leading brain imaging program.
The institute will also collaborate with genomics experts at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) to investigate the genetic factors that contribute to Alzheimer's.
Alzheimer's disease affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 65 and nearly half of the population older than 85.
