Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz) has announced a second wave of grants and appointed two new board members.
The grants, which total $3.75 million, were awarded to 26 different projects statewide.
Called "competitive-advantage awards," the grants are designed to provide seed money to researchers with proposals that hold the promise of federal funding.
The awards went to projects at University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, Barrow Neurological Institute, Sun Health, and the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).
The foundation has also named Drs. Leroy Hood and Ira Levin to its board of directors.
Hood is a former University of Washington professor and founder of the Institute for Systems Biology. Among his many awards, Hood has received the Lemelson-MIT Prize for work related to the Human Genome Project.
Levin is a senior investigator and deputy director of the intramural research program at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases within the National Institutes of Health. His current work involves developing and translating basic laboratory research discoveries for clinical use.
