The Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and Arizona State University have announced a series of new collaborative efforts, including joint education programs, a joint seed-fund program, collaborative research, and shared office space.

According to the announcement, the new educational collaborations could include combined degree programs between Mayo Clinic and the ASU School of Law, the W.P. Carey School of Business, the ASU Graduate School, and potential development of an ASU-Mayo joint nursing program.

The two institutions also plan to establish a joint research and technology seed-fund program and engage in collaborative research in bioinformatics and bioengineering. The fund will allow ASU and Mayo Clinic researchers to investigate the feasibility of new research areas or technologies before diving into a larger scale research program.

"The bottom line is that if we are going to be successful in securing larger grants, such as the National Institutes of Health roadmap grants, then we need to have teams of scientists working together," said Kathy Matt, ASU's directory of clinical partnerships. "ASU provides the basic research expertise and Mayo Clinic provides the clinical expertise. It is a perfect partnership to accomplish interdisciplinary translational research."

According to agreements in place, Matt will be appointed to an administrative post at Mayo Clinic, and Dr. Keith Kelly, Mayo's co-director of the ASU-Mayo Partnership for Collaborative Research, has been appointed to a faculty position at ASU. The plan also includes establishing an ASU-Mayo collaborative partnership office at both institutions.

The partnership is the latest in a long history of collaborations between ASU and Mayo Clinic, including an agreement last year to advance specific areas of research, such as neuroimaging, receptor biology, microdevices, and vaccine development.
