Full Story:

Lih-fen Lue, a senior scientist at Sun Health Research Institute, has received $1 million from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health.

With the money, Lue will continue her research on vascular inflammation--specifically, how vascular and brain cells interact with the blood-brain barrier, through which chemicals and nutrients pass into and out of the brain.

The four-year study will examine vascular cells from the elderly to model how cells interact in various diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, two areas of specialization for which Sun Health Research Institute is internationally known.

Lue is well-known for her work on neuroinflammation. Ten years ago she first isolated the brain cells responsible for inflammatory response in brain diseases. She and her research partner Douglas Walker in Sun Health's Neuroinflammation Laboratory have also developed a groundbreaking procedure to isolate cells from brain blood vessels and identify the inflammatory cell types.
