Mentorship
Navigating the four years of a college education can be a tricky task. Students can be confused by course selection, doubtful about majors and eventual career paths, and oblivious to the opportunities that may be just around the corner. Fortunately, we can help.
The Flinn Scholars program has a built-in mechanism to ensure that a college education does not become a lost opportunity. The universities pair each Scholar with a senior faculty member to serve as a personal mentor. The teamwork provides the Scholar guidance and, in many cases, leads to internship opportunities and research projects.
Scholars meet with their mentor on an occasional basis, discussing everything from classes to favorite music. A mentor can serve as a guidance counselor, career adviser, sounding board, and friend. Scholars and their mentors often form lasting bonds.
Beyond their personal mentor, Scholars also benefit from guidance from the staffs of the Flinn Scholars Program and university honors offices. The depth of knowledge and expertise such individuals possess can prove to be a great help when applying for graduate school and prestigious fellowships.
