Community of Scholars

On campus, Flinn Scholars can be found serving in top student government positions, directing (and founding) charitable groups, editing the student newspaper, chairing honorary societies, performing in theatre, playing in the marching band, and pole-vaulting for the varsity track team. And Flinn Scholar-led teams have been known to win many an intramural championship!

Flinn Scholars also bond with one another to form a Community of Scholars—a thriving academic environment fueled by like-minded individuals who motivate one another to excel, developing long-lasting friendships in the process.

Activities throughout the year, sponsored by the Flinn Scholars Program and honors programs of the universities, keep the Community flourishing and help maintain a strong Scholars network across the three universities. In addition to meetings with local and national leaders in government, business, education, and the arts, group trips are arranged to the opera, theatre, symphony, and other cultural opportunities. Especially popular are annual events, including weekend field trips to historic and natural sites such as the Chiracahua Mountains for hikes and customized behind-the-scenes tours; a day of sculpting and drawing in the studios of renowned sculptor John Waddell; and the Flinn Scholars public policy seminars, in which Scholars examine hot-topic policy issues with their leading proponents and opponents.

The Community extends beyond campus and into the ranks of the Flinn Scholar alumni. More than 200 graduated Flinn Scholars, at various stages of graduate school and career, are eager to provide counsel and connections. Many of them have reported that the unique and powerful network of individuals turned out to be a most rewarding part of their undergraduate experience.
