ASU professor touts algae for use as food, fuel

That’s the message in an Arizona State University professor’s new book on green algae, which was named the 2009 Top Science Book of the Year by Independent Publisher.

Mark Edwards’ Green Algae Strategy: End Oil Imports and Engineer Sustainable Food and Fuel, won a gold medal “IPPY” award for examining the infinite ways algae can feed the world, fight diseases and fuel engines. For instance, Edwards reports that 50 species of algae that settle on mud puddles can be grown on reclaimed water farms and processed into flour, similar to wheat or corn. It grows 30 times faster and offers twice the protein.
