Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert plans to break ground in January on a $62.6 million expansion project that will nearly double the size of its existing outpatient center.

The 111,000-square-foot expansion will include new examination rooms and treatment bays, three linear accelerators for radiation treatments, and the expansion of a laboratory intake center and welcome center.

The expansion is expected to open in spring 2014 just south of the existing center, which opened in September 2011 at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert.

A $5 million donation from the James M. Cox Family Foundation will help fund the new Cox Center for Integrative Oncology and Cancer Prevention, which will feature evidence-based integrative therapies such as relaxation techniques to help with pain relief and stress.
