Position Overview

The Building and Facilities Technician monitors and maintains the Flinn Foundation’s building, which includes a Conference Center, and grounds surrounding the building, including resolution of maintenance and safety issues. This position also ensures the professional operation of the Conference Center and provides exceptional customer service to staff and guests.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensures clean and well-maintained exterior building and grounds including daily monitoring for staff and guest safety and security issues, monitors landscaping and irrigation systems, automatic gates, and fountain for proper functioning.
  • Ensures a clean and well-maintained interior building including daily monitoring for staff and guest safety and security issues.
  • Manages a preventative maintenance schedule, which includes HVAC system maintenance and repairs, air filter replacement, elevator maintenance, pest control, carpet cleaning, window washing, parking lot maintenance, and others.
  • Monitors the HVAC plant and climate-control system and adjusts settings as needed; backs up the Conference Center & Guest Experience Coordinator in programming air schedules for all public, staff, and Conference Center spaces as scheduled/needed.
  • Backs up the Conference Center & Guest Experience Coordinator in programming automatic gate opening/closing schedules as needed.
  • Monitors the security and fire alarm systems.
  • Performs general repairs that do not require a specialized technician. Examples may include repairing drywall, painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.
  • Provides timely reports on maintenance or security issues to the Operations and Facilities Manager; secures bids for needed repairs as directed; schedules, monitors, and maintains positive, professional working relationships with outside vendors for approved repairs as needed or directed.
  • Performs minor clean-up as needed between nightly janitorial servicing, including interior and exterior trash pick-up and removal.
  • Proactively configures meeting room furniture as directed to ensure meeting rooms are ready in advance of Conference Center meetings.
  • Maintains a positive, supportive customer service approach and responds positively, quickly, and professionally when addressing needs or questions.
  • Maintains and organizes a modest supply of refreshments and/or office supplies.
  • Is onsite during scheduled work hours, maintaining flexibility to arrive early, stay late, or work weekends as needed or directed.
  • Is available on an on-call basis to respond to urgent building maintenance or security issues which may occur outside of scheduled work hours, and may include early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends.
  • Directs parking for Conference Center and/or Flinn guests as needed.
  • Troubleshoots AV problems and resolves issues or requests support from the Conference Center & Guest Experience Coordinator or other available staff.
  • Acts as a backup to the Conference Center & Guest Experience Coordinator by providing instructions to staff and guests for the operation of AV equipment and demonstrating its correct use.
  • Works effectively with others and provides support and assistance to other staff as needed or requested.
  • Undertakes other tasks as assigned and contributes to cooperative and collegial shared responsibility for fostering excellence at the Foundation.
  • Fosters the mission and values of the Flinn Foundation, including a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across internal practices, engagement with the community, and philanthropic activities.
  • Maintains professional development (continuing education and relevant association membership) in areas of professional responsibility.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and experience with essential building operations and maintenance functions, including utilities, HVAC, security and fire alarm systems, janitorial and landscaping services.
  • Knowledge of and experience with general carpentry and repair.
  • Ability to identify and resolve minor maintenance issues and coordinate with supervisor and appropriate outside vendors for significant maintenance issues.
  • Ability to be at work consistently when scheduled and accommodate a flexible work schedule when needed, including some early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends.
  • Ability to work in a professional manner, provide exceptional customer service, stay calm under pressure, and communicate positively and professionally with staff, Board members, guests, and vendors.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work effectively without close supervision, and monitor own work to ensure quality.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience with standard office software (email, word processing, spreadsheet, file management).
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot AV equipment preferred.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion with confidential information.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least three years of building maintenance or related experience required.

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to adjust or move objects up to 50 pounds in all directions.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, stoop, push/pull, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to move about to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to communicate with others to exchange information.
  • Capacity for prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and reliable transportation for supply pick-up.
  • Current auto insurance on personal vehicle.

Other Details

Location

Central Phoenix. This is an in-person position, functioning at the Flinn Foundation facility.

Schedule

This is a part-time (25 hours/week), non-exempt, hourly position, typically Monday-Friday, approximately 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Weekends as needed.

Wages and Benefits

The Flinn Foundation provides competitive compensation, commensurate with skills and experience. This position pays $28-$30 per hour. The Foundation provides paid holidays, sick leave, vacation, and 401(k).
