Founded in 2001, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence addresses the need to place a highly qualified teacher in every classroom. By offering a premier teaching credentials, the American Board opens new pathways into the classroom, helping states, districts, and communities meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.

The American Board aims to:

  • Offer a new approach to teacher certification that is rigorous and reliable, focused on the skills and experience that are critical to impact student learning;
  • Provide states with a consistent supply of high quality teachers to meet the needs of classrooms nationwide; and
  • Recognize experienced teachers of high merit and proven effectiveness, encouraging a diverse community of American Board teachers dedicated to classroom excellence and the need for all students to achieve academic gains

To meet this goal, the American Board has developed the Passport to Teaching certification and is developing the Master Teacher certification.
