The University of Arizona is reshaping its technology transfer method to more effectively bring its lab innovations to the marketplace.

The strategy to benefit both the public and university will be led by David Allen, the new executive director of the UA’s Tech Launch Arizona (TLA). Allen, 60, comes from the University of Colorado in Boulder where he served as associate vice president for technology transfer.

Allen said TLA has a number of functions. First, it is to secure and protect intellectual property assets. Second is to help the Office of Corporate and Business Relations to integrate with industry. Third is to integrate the UA research parks into the university in a more seamless manner.

Allen told the Arizona Daily Star: “I think the investment in this office is sufficient now to get us to a point in a few years where we’re really delivering. My line is, ‘We’re going to be great in commercialization’ – and that is going to occur sooner than a lot of people suspect.”
