The TGen Center for Rare Childhood Diseases will use whole-genome sequencing to study children suffering from ailments that have been difficult or impossible to diagnose.
The new Phoenix-based center will pinpoint the causes of the rare disorders, allowing doctors to evaluate the proper drugs or treatment options.
A decade ago, TGen had identified rare childhood disease as a potential study area.
TGen officials said rare diseases or disorders can afflict 1 in 150 children. The National Institutes of Health estimates there are 7,000 rare diseases affecting 25 million people in the United States.
