Two new clinical trials aimed at treating Alzheimer’s disease are starting at Barrow Neurological Institute. The first trial will look at the effects of a bone cancer drug in those living with mild cognitive impairment and the second trial involves a drug used to treat multiple sclerosis.

ASU President Michael Crow recently held a Q&A session with John Shufeldt, who provided a nine-figure gift to operate the new John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering, which will welcome its first students this fall. Crow said graduates of the new medical school will have an MD degree as well as a master’s degree in engineering, and will be proficient in using technology — including AI.

The shingles vaccine is really good at preventing shingles — about 98% effective, according to Banner Health Chief Research Officer Corey Casper. But new research suggests it may also prevent other ailments, like dementia and cardiovascular disease.
