The Flinn Foundation has approved two separate grants to support innovative Alzheimer’s disease research and a data project to enhance cancer prevention research and care delivery across the state.
- Alzheimer’s research: A $1.85 million grant over three years to Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation will support the investigation of new blood-based biomarkers at Banner Sun Health Research Institute’s Fluid Biomarker Program and the development of new tests to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease guided by a broader picture of a patient’s brain.
- Arizona Cancer Data Platform: A $1.8 million grant over 24 months to Arizona State University will support the development of the Arizona Cancer Data Platform, in partnership with Arizona Department of Health Services, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona, HonorHealth and Valleywise Health. The grant will fund the building and validation of the platform with the flexibility to expand into other high-priority areas in the future.
“The Flinn Foundation is excited to be funding these two multi-year projects that will lead to advancements and innovation among Arizona’s proven strengths in neuroscience and cancer research,” said Mary O’Reilly, Ph.D., Flinn Foundation vice president, bioscience research. “We believe these projects will improve both the care and health outcomes for patients suffering from these diseases.”
The grants help advance the goals of Arizona’s Bioscience Roadmap, specifically accelerating research into impact and amplifying the state’s “collaborative gene.” The Roadmap, commissioned by the Flinn Foundation, is a statewide, long-term strategic plan with a vision to establish Arizona as a nationally recognized leader.
The Flinn Foundation is a Phoenix-based privately endowed, philanthropic grantmaking organization established in 1965 by Dr. Robert S. and Irene P. Flinn that awards grants and operates programs in four areas: the biosciences, the Flinn Scholars, arts and culture, and the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership. The foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in Arizona to benefit future generations.
