Arizona Heart Institute files for Chapter 11

Arizona Heart Institute has filed for bankruptcy protection and proposes selling its assets to Vanguard Health Systems in a deal valued at nearly $6.1 million.

The Heart Institute, a physician-owned group founded by cardiovascular surgeon Edward Diethrich in 1971, cited the turbulent economy and a general decline in reimbursements from government and private insurers as financial pressures in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

Tucson biotech gets a nod from the National Cancer Institute to develop treatment

NuvOx Pharma, LLC, a biotechnology firm based in Tucson, Arizona, received a grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to fund development of its lead oxygen delivery product, NVX-108. Dr. Jennifer Johnson, Chief Operating Officer of NuvOx, said, “It’s not easy for small companies to get a ‘leg-up’ in this economic climate; thus, we are so pleased that this funding will fully support our team on a project in which we will be able to optimize and preliminarily test our product, NVX-108, against cancer.”

Boycott forces ClearHealth to relocate

A medical company has decided to move its headquarters from Chandler to Las Vegas because it faced losing clients in the boycott of Arizona.

"Virtually all of our larger customers are boycotting the state," said David Uhlman, CEO of ClearHealth, a company that operates medical facilities and develops technology in medical-practice management and electronic records.

UA expert: Poor social skill, depression possibly linked

If you're depressed, your internal wiring may not be the only culprit. Local research suggests it might be more than biology.

Behavioral scientist Chris Segrin, who also heads the University of Arizona communi- cations department, said he thinks poor social skills and depression are closely linked. His research will be published in "Handbook of Interpersonal Psychology" in the fall.

Moving past internal causes of depression came from Segrin's communications and psychology background, he said.

Researcher making advances in crime-scene investigation

A researcher at Chandler's new science and technology incubator is making advances in crime-scene investigation.

That research - as well as work to improve medicine and homeland security - is led by a big name in science: Frederic Zenhausern, a professor at the University of Arizona.

Because of his research, in the near future, DNA could be identified by such small instruments that law enforcement wouldn't need to take samples to a lab. The testing could be done in a police car or by immigration officials at a border with the goal of proving identification, thereby repelling terrorists and other criminals.

 

City of Phoenix seeking developer for new biomedical building

The city of Phoenix is seeking a developer to build a new biomedical facility on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

City officials are expecting the project to be at least 100,000 square feet and four stories tall. It would be next to the existing 170,000-square-foot facility occupied by the Translational Genomics Research Institute.

 

Jennifer Barton is one women who wears many hats at UA

The University of Arizona’s Jennifer Barton is the assistant director and No. 3 person at Bio5 Institute, she is the department head of the newly established Department of Biomedical Engineering, chair of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Interdisciplinary Program, and she is a researcher and teaches classes within optics, electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering.
